a piece i wrote for haiti

For only 10 cents a day you can help a child survive, or rather you can help sustain the illusion that a dime can silence the cries of a country. Caught in a bind of misery, a ball of confusion where many are forced to dine off of water and dirt. Can money heal the hurt? Can charitable funds reimburse kids with guns who have everything to die for but nothing to live. Nothing to give but statistics on lists of places where you might see flies on kids faces. Where you might just die if you hear the stories of babies being thrown away, or orphans being forced to stay outside of missionaries because there is no space for him to lay. Can you even pray? Or does capitalism not allow that provision? Perhaps Haiti remains imprisoned until we ourselves make a revision.

Seeing that 10 cents a day doesn’t make a difference, we need to make ourselves different and no longer be distant. We need to take a stand against indifference, to stop seeing Haiti as a part of the third world, and as a part of our world. Our people, our equals, our problems, our tragedy. Then maybe we can gradually work towards change. But not monetary change, it’s bigger than that. It’s bigger than infomercials, it’s bigger than 1-800 numbers, it’s bigger than Feed The Children. It’s about taking on the facts, and not lapsing into the traps of apathy. Break the bubble, shatter the mold, acknowledge the catastrophe, and do something. We owe it to ourselves. Operators are standing by…

NASA on an Earth Hunt

Before Global Warming melts the planet, let's get outta here...

An unmanned Nasa mission to search the sky for Earth-like planets with the potential to host life has launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

The Kepler telescope will orbit the Sun to watch a patch of space thought to contain about 100,000 stars like ours.

It will look for the slight dimming of light from these "suns" as planets pass between them and the spacecraft.

Controllers took their first opportunity to launch the probe, at 0349GMT (2249EST) on 7 March.

Kepler blasted off atop a Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

"This is a historical mission; it's not just a science mission," said Dr Edward Weiler, Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at Nasa.

"I maintain that it really attacks some very basic human questions that have been part of our genetic code since that first man or woman looked up into the sky and asked the question: 'are we alone?'."

Equipped with the largest camera ever launched into space, it is the first mission designed to find rocky worlds orbiting Sun-like stars. Planets located in a warm zone - known as the habitable zone - might host liquid water on their surfaces.

And where there is liquid water, scientists argue, there is at least the potential for life.

Eminem's Relapse

He's Back! Scheduled to drop to albums this year, Marshall's first relapse is set to drop March 19th. Stay tuned...

SANTA MONICA, CA - March 5, 2009 – Eminem, the biggest selling music artist of the decade, officially announced the street date of his eagerly awaited new album; his first original studio album in over four years. Relapse (Interscope/ Aftermath/Shady) will be released on May 19, 2009. The first single from the album and its accompanying video will see a simultaneous release on April 7th.

Anticipation for Relapse has been building since the fall, when Eminem first announced the album title and debuted the freestyle, “I’m Having A Relapse,” during an interview on his Shade 45 satellite radio station. Last month, the release of “Crack A Bottle” from Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent brought that anticipation to a head. The track soared to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (Eminem’s second #1 after 2002’s “Lose Yourself”) and set a Nielsen SoundScan record for opening week download sales (418,000). The recording ranked third in the history of all weekly download sales. “Crack A Bottle” will be included as an album track on Relapse.

With the announcement of the release date for Relapse also comes confirmation of something that had been rumored in recent weeks: Eminem is already working on a follow-up album, Relapse 2, that fans can expect in the second half of 2009. “A lot of people were expecting Relapse to drop last year,” said Eminem. “I was one of them. Then Dre and I went back in the studio in September for a few days, and that turned into six months. We were on such a roll; we wound up with a ton of new music produced by Dre. Putting out Relapse 2 will let everyone get all of the best stuff.”

Eminem has sold more than 75,000,000 albums worldwide. His previous studio album, Encore, reached #1 and dominated the charts in late 2004. Certified quadruple platinum and spinning off four Top 40 Hot 100 hits, the Grammy-nominated disc has sold more than 11,000,000 copies around the globe. The #1, double platinum, 2005 greatest hits collection, Curtain Call: The Hits and #2, platinum, 2006 various artists compilation, Eminem Presents: The Re-Up, followed. In October 2008, Eminem released “Eminem: The Way I Am”, a book compiling thoughts, stories, and memorabilia from various points in his life. The book entered the New York Times Best-Seller list at #11.
